Ice skating rink, electrical upgrade could be coming to the Va. Beach's Farmer Market

The Virginia Beach City Council will hear proposed plans to upgrade the Virginia Beach Farmers Market with a winter ice skating rink and replace their gas generators with electric generators.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- This Tuesday, Virginia Beach City Council will hear proposed plans to upgrade the Virginia Beach Farmers Market, located at the corner of Dam Neck and Princess Anne Road.

The Virginia Beach Director of Agriculture, David Trimmer is presenting the proposal to add a winter ice skating rink and swap out their gas generators for electric generators.

Trimmer said those generators are used here during annual events, like carnivals, which typically take place at the Virginia Beach Farmers Market nine times a year.

After more than 50 years of business at the market, Creekmore’s Place vendor Sharon Creekmore Mosley said she’d like the potential changes.

“I think it may be a good idea,” said Mosley.

She said the most important part of the Farmers Market is how safe it is for kids. So, all she asks of the city is that they “make sure that [the market] will continue to be a safe place for kids and families to shop.”

Customers said they’d enjoy the new features, like ice skating.

“I think it’ll be fun,” said Virginia Beach native, Abby Rothschild. “You won’t have to go to MacArthur. We haven’t had anything like that in Virginia Beach.”

When it’s cold outside, the Director of Agriculture said having an electrical upgrade will bring more business to stands and shops at the market.

The upgrades would cost the city about $167,667.

However, it’s money the agriculture director said the city already has and can be transferred from the city’s Housing Resource Center.

The city council meeting will be at the Virginia Beach City Council Chambers at 2401 Courthouse Drive in Building 1.

It is a formal session, but the community can listen to the council's discussion.

Council members will discuss these proposed changes at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. However, their formal meeting will be at 6 p.m. where residents can come and comment on the proposal.
