Today, June 6, 2012, in Virginia Beach a fire rainbow cloud was photographed by Donna Vaughn on a bright sunny day. This is a very rare occurrence. Four elements are required for the formation of a fire rainbow cloud: A cirrus cloud, with the right amount of ice crystals, at least 20,000 feet high, and the sun striking the cloud at an angle of precisely 58 degrees. The F-14 in the foreground of the picture on the right side gives a perspective of how large the fire rainbow cloud was. The photo was shot from the 20th floor of the Hilton Virginia Beach at the Oceanfront.
