VIRGINIA BEACH - An average growing season for Pungo strawberries is 30 days from bloom to berry.
This season, due to our longer, cooler winter, it will be 50 days bloom to berry.
Wink Henley and his son Bruce have about 14 acres of strawberry fields in Pungo. They think the crop will be fine for the Pungo Strawberry Festival on May 29-30
"The only thing we have to fear is a week or two of 90-degree weather," said farmer Wink Henley.
This could turn out to be a better than expected year for strawberries. The Sweet Charlie variety are already being picked. The Chandler variety, which make up 70% of the crop here, will be ready in two weeks.
