VIRGINIA BEACH -- Officials were surprised at how many people flooded the Oceanfront for College Beach Weekend, thanks in part to promotion of the event on social media.

"Unbelievable" is the word Mayor Will Sessoms uses to describe the number of people that turned out.

Although police believe college students made up the majority of the crowds, they don't believe they  were involved in any of the violence.

Police believe once the news of the big event hit social media, it spread like wildfire.

It started with a flier advertising College Beach Weekend at the Oceanfront.

The flier featured scantily clad models making an appeal to six colleges in Virginia, including Hampton University, NSU and ODU, that Virginia Beach was the place to be.

Social media took over from there as hundreds of tweets anticipated the weekend.

@Prettycrys' tweet says "Beach Weekend was promoted heavily I see ... good job and s/o to the NSU and VSU promoters who started this event !!"

Mayor Sessoms says in the future, beach police will monitor social media leading up to an event in order to be more prepared.
