NORFOLK -- Police responded to a shooting near the campus of Old Dominion University at about 1:00 a.m. Saturday.
It took place in the 800 block of West 41st Street near Killam Avenue. When officers got there, they found someone with a gunshot wound. Paramedics took him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He should make a full recovery.
Karen Parker-Chesson, a spokeswoman for Norfolk Police Department, said the victim was walking with several acquaintances when they observed 2 women physically fighting.
The shooter, who hasn't been named yet, ordered, "Everyone, get back!" and fired a handgun several times.
Parker-Chesson added that the incident remains under investigation.
Although the shooting did not involve the university, ODU has residence halls near the intersection where the shooting occurred. Students told 13News Now that they did not receive an alert message.
Jennifer Mullen Collins with Old Dominion University said all indications were that the incident was not a threat to campus. The Clery Act requires the school to notify campus when something happens on campus and presents an ongoing danger.
The ODU Chief of Police makes the decision about alerts, and there are clear guidelines for issuing them. This incident did not appear to meet the requirements.
Details about the shooter are limited, but police say witnesses described him as being between 5-feet-8-inches tall to 5-feet-11-inches tall, with his hair in cornrows or braids. He also wore a Cincinnati Reds ball cap.
