NEWPORT NEWS - Fire damaged equipment at a preschool playground in Newport News.
Firefighters were called to the Marshall Early Childhood Center, behind John Marshall School on 24th Street, around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
The fire melted the plastic and metal equipment and caused about $20,000 damage, said Chief Steve Pincus.
It took about 20 minutes to get the fire under control, he added.
No one was hurt and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
The fire didn't keep the school children from being able to play outside on this spring-like day.
"While the area near the damaged play equipment is restricted, there is another play structure that the students may use," said Newport News Schools spokeswoman Michelle Price. "The playground area is large, so the students still have enough room for recess activities."
