CHESAPEAKE---The Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization is taking a look into the future.
Engineers are studying what truck volumes and congestion will look like in our area in 20 years.
A new model is allowing them to do this for the first time ever.
The idea is to get a better feel for what freight travel will look like in the future so transportation officials can develop projects that will make it easier for truckers to get to and from our ports.
"The roads are not equipped to handle trucks," said truck driver Mike Foster. "They need to expand and put more money into it."
Based on current research, freight to and from Hampton Roads ports will be worth more than $500 billion in 2040, up from about $100 billion in 2010.
