VIRGINIA BEACH -- Detectives have recovered crosses taken from the memorial to Officer Rod Pocceschi that has been along Dam Neck Road since 2003. Pocceschi died after being shot during a traffic stop.

The crosses were found in the 1400 block of  North Muddy Creek Road in Pungo near Blue Pete’s Restaurant.

According to Grazia Moyers, detectives will photograph and take fingerprints,  then take the crosses back to the precinct.

Officers also recovered many other crosses that appear to have been taken from roadside memorials.

Police are asking anyone who may have noticed one missing from a memorial to contact them so that officers can try to get the crosses back to their appropriate places.

On June 23rd, 2003, Officer Rodney Pocceschi stopped a car for a traffic violation along Dam Neck Road, not realizing the people inside it just robbed an IHOP restaurant.

The driver of the car got out of it with a gun. He and Pocceschi exchanged fire. Although Pocceschi wore a protective vest, a bullet shot through an armhole. The 33-year-old husband and father later died.

Since that time, a tribute to him has been set up at the spot along Dam Neck Road, located between London Bridge Road and Harpers Road. The memorial has changed in appearance during the past decade, but a wooden cross has been part of it all that time, or rather had been part of it.

Last Wednesday, someone contacted Pocceschi's sister, Gina Boyle to alert her to the fact at two of the crosses in her brother's memorial had been removed.

The investigation into who took the crosses is on-going.
