VIRGINIA BEACH-- A one-day food drive on Thursday will help feed students who don't have enough to eat.

At the 'Fill a Beach Bag and Feed a Beach Child' food drive, volunteers at Town Center and Landstown Commons were taking food donations to restock food supplies.

The program provides meals and healthy snacks to students who may not have enough to eat over the weekends and school breaks.

"We send out about 250 bags a week of food and it has two full days of meals in each bag," said coordinator Laura Smart.

Since 2009 the program has provided 19,000 backpacks of food for needy students.

"We send out requests weekly and the schools let us know how many they need," said Smart.
