NORFOLK-- Amtrak Virginia says the new Washington to Norfolk route generated more than 11,000 trips.
The service from Harbor Park started December 12, bringing back passenger rail service that stopped in the 1970s.
Preliminary ridership numbers show between 11,200 and 11,500 trips were made in December, double what the city projected, according to Assistant City Manager Ron Williams.
Officials also report that close to 6,500 passengers got on or off at the Norfolk stop in that same time.
The Amtrak line connects Norfolk riders to Richmond, Petersburg, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Boston and New York.
