SUFFOLK -- "Thank God people paid attention to me," said Ron Copeland as he sat in his car in a ditch along Bennetts Pasture Road. "They saw I was coming through the intersection."
Copeland and the car were early casualties of the snowstorm that moved through the area. Not long after flakes began falling, leaving the roadway with a light coating on it, Copeland found himself crossing the lines.
"I don't drive this car too much, and it's new to us," explained Copeland, "so I turned on the snow control, and it would grab and release, and grab and release, and it just push me through the intersection, and the brakes wouldn't stop it."
Copeland's mishap was one of 76 in the City of Suffolk between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Friday.
There were spin-outs and other traffic problems throughout the city. Icy conditions prompted police to block exit ramps coming off Route 58. That, along with wrecks, caused a back-up that stretched for several.
A wreck on Interstate 464 in the South Norfolk area of Chesapeake had people sitting in traffic as far back as Downtown Norfolk.
