JAMES CITY COUNTY - Health officials are trying to find anyone who handled a raccoon that turned out to have rabies.

The animal was found in the Forge Road area of James City County (Toano) on Sunday February 3rd. It was alive in the road, so people stopped, picked it up and took it to the fire station.

The animal didn't survive its injuries and testing determine it was rabid. So, the people who picked it up may not know they were exposed.

Anyone with information about them should call 757- 603-4277 or after hours, contact Animal Control, Newport News/Poquoson Animal Control: 595-7387; York County Animal Control: 890-3601 or the James City County/Williamsburg Animal Control: 253-1800.
