VIRGINIA BEACH-- Public Works crews will be on site at a bridge on Elbow Road on Saturday and Sunday to repair damage caused by a three-vehicle accident that happened Friday morning. Crews will begin work at 8 a.m. both days.
The accident occurred in the 4000 block of Elbow Road near Walpole Street around 7 a.m. Friday.
Contractors inspected the bridge Friday afternoon and determined that while there was no major superstructure damage to the bridge itself, the guard rail along the eastbound lane was seriously damaged, as well as two wingwall piles.
Work to remove and replace the guard rail will begin Saturday morning and is expected to take two days – weather permitting.
The eastbound lane will need to be blocked for safety reasons, with traffic both westbound and eastbound alternating through the westbound lane.
Public Works will be coordinating traffic control with the police department, and police officers will be on site to assist with traffic.
The accident involved a city vehicle, a waste management truck, and two other vehicles.
Police say nobody was injured. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
