SELCUK, Turkey - Tens of thousands of people cheered for their favorite camel during the annual Camel Wrestling Championship in Selcuk, Turkey.
How do they get them to fight? Organizers say a female camel in heat stands near two males that fight for her affection. The males naturally fight for their females during mating season, their readiness to do battle visible in the white froth coming from their mouths, the tension in their hind legs and their tails whipping at their backs.
The male camels wear traditional bead-embroidered saddles, veil-draped headdresses and fluorescent pompoms on their sides.
130 camels, or 65 pairs, participated in this year's competition, which offered a Turkish carpet as its main prize.
There is no overall winner of the competition.
