PORTSMOUTH--Traffic has re-opened on I-264 in Portsmouth after two people were struck while trying to flag down traffic Tuesday.
State Police say a man stopped on the shoulder of I-264 eastbound to assist a woman whose Toyota Rav4 appeared to be stuck in the grass median.
Spokeswoman Sgt. Michele Anaya said the man crossed the travel lanes to the median and the two tried to signal traffic to slow down, causing sudden stops in the eastbound lanes. A Chevy truck lost control and struck the man and woman in the median.
"This is the reason why you call State Police. Interstates, highways, you’ve got lots of volume of traffic, high rate of speeds and something like this could have been avoidable," said Anaya.
Police say the victims suffered serious injuries and were taken to Norfolk Sentara.
The accident is still under investigation.
