JAMES CITY COUNTY -- A Fort Eustis soldier and his reported mistress are charged in connection with the murder of the soldier's wife.

Deputies say 42-year-old Dana Patterson Mackay died inside her Seasons Trace home following an apparent struggle Saturday.  A neighbor, who went to the home to check on her at the request of an out-of-state relative, found her body and called for help.

The cause of death has been ruled blunt force trauma, authorities stated.

Her husband, 42-year-old John Wayne Mackay, and Nicole Michelle Houchin, 35, are each charged with 1st degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Mackay is a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army stationed at Ft. Eustis.

Police say Mackay and Houchin admitted to having an affair.

Both were arraigned this morning and had counsel appointed, Commomwealth's Attorney Nate Green told WVEC.com.

They remain in jail and preliminary hearings are set - August 22 for Mackay and Sept. 13 for Houchin, Green added.
