NEWPORT NEWS - A Newport News woman was buried today and two teenagers have been charged with her murder.

The family of 27-year-old Phyllis Vinston says she was trying to protect her children when she was allegedly shot.

Vinston was struck by gunfire on January 5 at Marshall Court Apartments on 35th Street.

Police say the boys, ages 15 and 16, were chasing two people.

"It carried over into the courtyard in which Vinston was in," said police spokeswoman Holly McPherson.

The older boy was arrested Thursday morning in an apartment off of J. Clyde Morris Blvd.

The younger suspect was found as police investigated a 2:00 a.m. shooting on January 13 at Walker Village Apartments on Jefferson Ave.

The boys are charged with murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a juvenile.
