WILLIAMSBURG –  Cupcakes and other forms of art are helping to revitalize a section of Williamsburg.

Officials hope a new art district will attract both locals and tourists.

Extraordinary Cupcakes opened this week making it the fifth creative business in the new Williamburg Arts District which is designed to be similar to Ghent in Norfolk.

"It's a work of art,” said Lois McDonald.

"If you can make it look pretty and it tastes good, that's a no brainer for me.  Sign me up," said Beverly Phillips.

Some say people come to Williamsburg but there's little to make them want to stay in town.

“There's a real demand for entertainment and fun stuff, whether its pottery or art or food or music or any of that,” said Adam Steely of Extraordinary cupcakes.  “I think people are looking for a fun way to enjoy themselves."

The district provides tax incentives and regulatory relief to qualified creative businesses and artists who do business in the district.

“It also helps the local economy with sales tax revenue to the city and it makes for a better city for our citizens," stated Demetrios Florakis with the Williamsburg Planning Commission.

Next month, an antique shop will become the next business to open in the Arts District.
