ELIZABETH CITY, NC - Elizabeth City State University was on lockdown for nearly two hours overnight after shots were fired on campus.
The alert sent to students and staff said shots rang out around 11:00 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. Thursday near Mitchell Lewis and the Complex residence halls.
During the lockdown, only students were allowed on campus and university leadership urged everyone to get to their dorms or stay inside.
The lockdown was lifted just before 1:00 a.m. Friday.
A man who lives in the apartments across the street said he had just gotten home and heard four or five gunshots and then saw police converge on the university.
"It was scary. I just went inside," he said.
Campus police were checking IDs of anyone driving on campus.
Captain Mark Gray with University police received a superficial facial abrasion on his right cheek during the investigation. He was treated at the scene by EMS and released to work the remainder of the night. The cause of the abrasion has not been determined.
University officials continue to investigate.
