NEWPORT NEWS - Repairs to a gas line in Newport News will affect traffic into midday Friday, police say.
The line under Jefferson Avenue at Middle Ground Boulevard broke around 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, forcing northbound traffic down to one lane.
Va. Natural Gas crews worked through the night.
"We have made significant progress overnight and anticipate that the repairs on Jefferson Avenue will be completed in time for the afternoon rush," spokesman Duane Borne told WVEC.com.
After repairs to the line are made, the road needs to be fixed.
Drivers can use Warwick Boulevard, Canon Boulevard or I-64 to avoid delays.
Bourne told WVEC.com that the company isn't sure what caused the break.
"After the repairs are complete, we will do a thorough evaluation of the event to determine what may have caused this to happen," he said.
Construction work will predominantly take place on the center median.
