VIRGINIA BEACH –  For those who need service dogs, it’s not always an instant bond.

There is a program called Puppy Love that’s used in Virginia Beach.  It involves two elementary schools and it helps special needs children to learn about animal interaction.  It’s especially important for those who will use man’s best friend to help them in life’s challenges.

On Tuesday, black lab puppies visited Corporate Landing Elementary School.  The puppies are being raised by seniors at the Atlantic Shores Retirement Community.

One student named Robert had never felt a puppy lick before.  Trainer Kathy Parks says it’s teaching both the dog and the students how to act.

“With Guiding Eyes, they can't just flock to the dogs. The dogs have to know how to react to small children as well as adults,” explained Parks.  “Eventually one of these dogs could be paired with one of these children or another child who is blind or has a disability.”

Brian McCann lost his vision in 2007 due to a genetic disease.   He is the center of seeing eye dog Julie’s attention.

“She is very important to me.  I couldn't get along normally without her,” said McCann.

Ocean Lakes Elementary is another school that is participating in the partnership.
