PORTSMOUTH---Local leaders in Portsmouth are asking other cities in Hampton Roads to join in on the tunnel tolls war.

Last week, Portsmouth council members announced a $50,000 contribution to a tolls lawsuit that hopes to take down the current tunnel contract with the state.

The call to action comes as part of the Elizabeth River Trail is rerouted for new Midtown Tunnel construction.

Crews will close sections of the trail southwest of Olney Road to south of Plum Point Park starting Monday.

"Quite a few citizens from throughout Hampton Roads, not just Portsmouth, have become a part of this protest," said Portsmouth Mayor Kenny Wright. "We need to pump more financial horsepower into this suit."

The first court hearing for the lawsuit is scheduled for May 1 in Portsmouth Circuit Court.

Portsmouth council is expected to approve their contribution next week.
