Pirates hold off Eagles in double overtime

HAMPTON,VA-The Hampton University men's basketball needed 10 extra minutes to snap its two-game skid on Sunday, outlasting Winthrop 101-95 in double overtime at the HU Convocation Center.

Hampton (6-7) scored 100 points in a game for the first time since Jan. 23, 2006, when the Pirates defeated Savannah State 100-57.

Senior forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell led five Pirates in double figures with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Brian Darden added a career-high 19 points on five 3-pointers.

Sophomore guard Dwight Meikle added 16 points, while sophomore guard Deron Powers chipped in 13 points and redshirt-freshman guard Lawrence Cooks had 12 points.

The two teams were tied at 91-91 with 3:48 left in the second OT, before the Pirates scored four straight points to take a 95-91 lead with 1:26 left on a layup from Cooks. Winthrop cut the deficit to two twice, trailing 97-95 with 12 seconds to go.

But Powers and senior guard Ramon Mercado each hit a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to clinch the win for the Pirates in their first overtime game of the season. Hampton outscored Winthrop 15-9 in the final five minutes
