VIRGINIA BEACH-Several homes in Va. Beach were evacuated Friday as crews burned 42 sticks of old dynamite found in an outbuilding.

People living in the 2700 block of Shorehaven Drive and in the 1400 block of Blue Heron Drive were evacuated as a precaution.  Residents on Blue Heron Court were told to stay inside.

Spokeswoman Amy Valdez says a hole was dug and a robot lowered each stick individually into that hole so crews can burn them off in a controlled way, so there’s no explosion.

Fire, police and bomb technicians remained on the scene Friday afternoon for secondary searches.

A neighbor tells 13News the dynamite was found by an auctioning company and there was an auction at the home last week.

The neighborhood is near Cox High School and Great Neck Rec Center. School officials tell us the school is operating as usual and is not affecting the school.  The Great Neck Rec Center is also operating normally.

No one has been hurt.
