NORFOLK -- The city of Norfolk is investing more than $1 million into a vital military thoroughfare.

As part of a revenue sharing program with the Virginia Department of Transportation, city officials agreed earlier this week to allocate $1.75 million towards the reconstruction of Terminal Boulevard.

VDOT would match the investment making the total cost of the project around $3.5 million.

According to a study conducted by VDOT, the condition of Terminal Boulevard is trending towards serious pavement failure. The study found that 66 percent of the road has a 'Critical Condition Index' (CCI) that is below average.

The project calls for improvements to the westbound lanes from Hampton Boulevard to Ruthven Road. This includes concrete pavement repairs and a three inch asphalt overlay that will improve port and naval access.

No word yet on when the work is scheduled to begin.
