VIRGINIA BEACH - Construction on the new Kellam High School is ahead of schedule and could be open by late January/early February.

Teachers and students played a part in designing the building.  It will be broken down into smaller learning communities, where classes can collaborate.

Environmental Studies students helped design the school's courtyards, where culinary students could grow vegetables.

Energy efficient features, from geothermal heat to high windows, are expected to help save money on utilities in the long run.

The old Kellam High had enough space for about 1,800 students. The new building can handle 200 more than that.

The total cost of the project, including land, furniture and technology, is $100 million.

When construction began in late 2010, the completion date was expected to be Spring 2014.
