WILLIAMSBURG -- A Williamsburg community is grieving with the family of a VSU student who went missing and is believed to have drowned following a hazing incident last Saturday.
Investigators are not saying whether the body recovered from the Appomattox River on Wednesday is that of 19-year-old Jauwan M. Holmes, who, along with 19-year-old Marvell Edmondson were swept away in what police say was a hazing initiation for the group "Men of Honor."
Police say seven male VSU students attempted to walk through the Appomattox River to complete their initiation.
Police believe the current swept the students down river. Some were pulled to safety and others drifted to shore.
Edmondson's body was recovered Monday.
James A. Mackey Sr., Eriq K. Benson and Cory D. Baytop, who is from Newport News, were arrested and charged with five counts of hazing each. Police have also charged Charles E. Zollicoffer II, but he has not been found.
"Holmes was a very respectful top-of-the-line kid and really had a bright future ahead of him, " said neighbor and family friend Neal Malik. "I don't think a parent should have to bury their child. It's a very difficult situation for someone to go through."
Holmes graduated from Bruton High School in York County.
