YORK COUNTY -- The driver of an SUV is recovering after he took out a light pole, ran through a service station, and smashed into other cars Wednesday. State police say a medical condition may have been responsible for what happened.

Late in the afternoon, York-Poquoson Sheriff's deputies tried to stop the SUV near the Citgo station on Merrimac Trail, just below James-York Plaza. The driver appeared to be driving erratically at the time.

"He slowed down. All of a sudden, he hit the accelerator and just took off," recalled Thennia Tucker who was in the area when everything happened. "Went over the curb, into the grass, through the Citgo gas station, plowed into a gray car, hit a pick-up truck, then, he flipped over."

"Really dangerous. I mean, it came through here, like, at 45 miles an hour through the gas pumps, and slammed into that car, and drove it like 60 feet," said Tommy Massey, who works at the service station.

Massey was standing at a bay door, talking to the owner of the gray car Tucker described. Massey parked it in the spot where the SUV hit it just minutes before the impact.

"It was destroyed. Like, the trunk was up where the driver's seat is. I mean, it was smashed," explained Massey, who added that the driver of the SUV also was a customer. "I inspected his car yesterday. I just put a door handle on it."

"When the firefighters got there, they all were very gentle with him, very kind, and very patient with him as they took him out. They had to use some kind of jaws of life or rod or something to get him out," Tucker told 13News Now. "There were people everywhere. He could have hurt someone. He could have crashed into one of the gas tanks there, but he didn't, by the Grace of God, he didn't."

State troopers are handling the part of the case involving the property damage. York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office is taking care of everything else.
