NEWPORT NEWS-- Most people would like to take a Friday off from work, but employees at the Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority are not looking foward to one Friday a month off without pay.

All 140 Housing Authority employees will be furloughed one day a month beginning May 3 due to federal sequestration cutbacks.

Missing those eight days for the rest of 2013 boils down to about a 3 pecent cut.

Karen Wilds is the executive director of the Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority and says the furlouhs are significant for workers.

"I know this is really a hardship for employees.  I'm anticipating that we might be able to adjust it later in the year, but this is the worst-case scenario," Wilds said.

The Housing Authority's programs have also been cut by more than 5 percent over the last three to four years. The staff has been reduced from 185 to 140 employees, mostly through attrition.

"I hope over the next 60 days we'll get better numbers from HUD or what our program dollars will be with the upcoming budget," Wilds said.
