HAMPTON -- Thousands who work for NASA were furloughed Tuesday due to the government shutdown.

The president said in a statement, "NASA will shut down almost entirely, but Mission Control will remain open to support the astronauts serving on the Space Station."

That includes employees at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, who showed up at work Tuesday morning and few hours later were sent home.

Since workers don't know how long they'll be on furlough, some employees collected all of their personal belongings to take with them.

Patrice Gamble of Gloucester County wasn't looking forward to this unscheduled time off.

"I'll cut the grass and sit at home.  That's all I can do. I don't have any other income," Gamble said.
