VIRGINIA BEACH-- Over 2,400 runners were off and trotting at the 35th annual Turkey Trot in Virginia Beach Thursday.

The 1-Mile Run/Walk began at 8:15 a.m. and the 10K Run started at 9:00 a.m.  Runners started at the Mount Trashmore YMCA on South Blvd.

The annual event by The Tidewater Striders is a tradition for many, and they are able to raise scholarship money from the event.

"We raised $14,000 that went to student-athletes this year from this race," said Dan Edwards, Tidewater Striders Race Director

There were young runners and older runners and many even dressed for the holiday.

"I Mean I'm 56 and I feel like I am 36, maybe.  So I think that's one of the biggest benefits, really and staying healthy.  And I have been very fortunate over the years," said longtime runner Dave McDonald.

The fastest runner ran the 10k in 31 minutes.

"I finished in under an hour, didn't feel good when I was running but feel good now," laughed Laura Laukaidis.

"I just to try to increase my health and be an example to my kid," said Scherena Couch.

After the trot many runners, like Allie Focke, said they were, "tiered and ready to go lay on the couch and watch football."

About 2,400 people were lined up early on this Thanksgiving Day but not to shop.
