NORFOLK--A loaded handgun found inside a dressing room at Macy's at Military Circle Mall belongs to a deputy.

The deputy realized as soon as he returned home that he had left his weapon behind and immediately notified the store and the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office’s Professional Standards Division, spokeswoman Paula Miller said.

She called the situation "very serious and unacceptable" and said immediate and appropriate disciplinary action was taken against the deputy.

Miller stated it's not uncommon or illegal for a deputy to carry his weapon while off duty.

Because this is an internal matter and no criminal charges are attached to this action, the sheriff’s office will not release the deputy's name, Miller added.

Norfolk Police spokesman Officer Chris Amos said the gun was legally owned/possessed. "At this point the police department is not pursuing charges against the owner," he stated.
