NORFOLK---Dirty waters have caught the attention of Governor Bob McDonnell, who has started a fight against litter and debris in Virginia's waterways by signing a proclamation Friday that makes June 2013 Marine Debris Reduction Month.

McDonnell hopes people will pay more attention to trash now, so it doesn't affect the environment and our water quality later.

"It sends a message from a very high level that litter is becoming an important problem," said Tanner Council with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

The Foundation just wrapped up their 25th annual Clean the Bay Day campaign, removing 140,000 pounds of trash in just three hours.
