VIRGINIA BEACH-- The job of an aquarist at the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center is filled with behind-the-scenes responsibilities.
There are over 100 tanks and 800,000 gallons of water to maintain and Joe started his job feeding the rays fish, shrimp and scallops.
Joe found out that anywhere from 200 to 400 pounds of food has to be prepared.
"If it rains, snows, or sleets the animals need to be fed, medicated, whatever. Our jobs are 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. We are the parents of these animals and we take that responsibility very seriously," said Beth Firchau, Curator of Fishes at the Virginia Aquarium.
There are 9 full-time and 4 part-time aquarists at the aquarium. They told Joe with some more training he might just make it!
