NORFOLK - Nearly 1,000 of the more than 5300 children in foster care in Virginia live in Hampton Roads.

The Up Center is holding three information sessions for families to consider getting involved to helping these youngsters.

Foster parent information sessions:
January 17
Norfolk:
12:00-1:00 p.m., 6350 Center Dr., Bldg. 5, Suite 210
6:00-7:00 p.m., 6350 Center Dr., Bldg. 5, Suite 210,
Portsmouth:
6:00-7:00 p.m., 1805 Airline Blvd.

Participants will be introduced to the foster care system, learn about the criteria and benefits of becoming a foster parent, the primary population of children in foster care, the job description of foster parents, and the role of the foster care agency.

Up Center officials say you do not have to be young, married, rich or the modern day Ozzie & Harriet family to be foster parents. They say couples should attend together.

To register for a Norfolk session, contact Brianne Meadows at 757- 284-2378. For the Portsmouth session, contact Shonya Anderson at 757-619-1380
