NORFOLK-- Several law enforcement and emergency agencies, including Sentara and CHKD,  joined hands in an emergency drill Thursday at EVMS in Norfolk.

The event had been planned since January, but in light of the recent tragedy in Boston, the drill proved to be very timely.

State Police First Sergeant David Brown says the likelihood of a major emergency like a mass shooting or bombing increases everyday and feels drills are the best way to prepare.

“This puts the agencies working together and gets them used to working with each other,“ said Brown.

Thursday's scenario involved a pretend gunman who was on a rampage on the third floor at EVMS.

Students posed as patients and the medical staff at Sentara and CHKD worked together to treat them as if they'd been wounded in a real emergency and police responded like they would if there was a real threat.
