ELIZABETH CITY, NC-Thieves have broken into nearly 40 vehicles in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

There are witnesses to some of the break-ins in the Riverside, Main and Church, and Sawyer Town areas and police are looking at surveillance video to identify those responsible.

Some vehicles were damaged; others were easy targets because they were unlocked, according to authorities.

"There's still that small town mentality," said downtown lawyer Van Johnson. "A lot of people leave their doors unlocked, but that number (of break-ins) is shocking."

Police remind everyone to take valuables from their vehicles or make sure they're not in plain sight. They also say it's important to lock doors and windows of your vehicle and your home to help stop the thieves.
