SUFFOLK -- An elderly woman has died after being rescued from her burning home.
City officials say 69-year-old Mary Rodgers died Sunday morning at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Fire fighters rescued Rodgers during a Saturday morning house fire in the Burnett's Mill subdivision.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue responded to her home in the 100 block of Mallard Drive around 9:00 a.m. When crews arrived they learned one woman was able to crawl out of the home, but Rodgers was still inside.
They were able to locate Rodgers and she was taken to a local hospital. She was later airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General for burn related injuries.
The woman who crawled out of the home was transported to Sentara Obici. Both women suffered smoke inhalation.
One firefighter was taken to a local hospital for minor burns to both of his ears.
Two dogs and one cat were also in the home during the fire. The dogs managed to escape, but crews discovered the cat died inside the home.
Firefighters were able to gain control of the fire around 9:30 a.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
