VIRGINIA BEACH - The family got out, but some of their pet dogs died when fire swept through their Virginia Beach home.
Firefighters arrived at Pembroke Manor - on Liberty Bell Road - just before 4 a.m. Monday and reported seeing smoke and flames coming from the home.
Authorities say the windy conditions made fighting the fire at Danny Bollinger's house difficult.
Bollinger says the power went out and then he saw the fire.
"(I) looked through my dining room to the back porch (and it was) engulfed in flames,” he said.
He said the fire went so fast that he and his wife were lucky to get out.
“We just ended up throwing a towel over the bird and got two of our four dogs out,” Bollinger added.
His wife was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and should be fine.
Robert, who lives nearby, posted on the WVEC13 Facebook page, "There was a thump/noise a FEW minutes before I heard the sirens ... I saw a flare up nearly an hour after the emergency crews arrived."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
