CHESAPEAKE-Bainbridge Blvd. at the Triple Decker Bridge in Chesapeake reopened late Tuesday, more than a day after Monday's heavy rain flooded the road.

Bainbridge Blvd. at S. Military Highway in the South Norfolk neighborhood was closed to traffic around 7:00 p.m.

"A crew is there now working on pumping the water out, but the ditches are still overwhelmed from last night’s rain so it’s not draining quickly," Public Works spokeswoman Elizabeth Vaughn told WVEC.com.

Drivers who weren't aware of the closure Tuesday were surprised when they tried to get onto I-464.

13News Meteorologist Evan Stewart said half an inch of rain fell in about 20 minutes in that area, which led to the accumulation of 5 1/2 feet at the underpass.

The road reopened around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday.
