Consumer Minute: Good news for Apple users & bad news for Coach fans

Apple's decision to add a kill switch to its iPhone seems to be paying off. Cell phone thefts during the past year have dropped dramatically. That's thanks in part to the switch which can render a stolen phone useless.

If you're looking to buy a house or refinance, here's some good news. The average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage dropped to 4.17 percent and the 15-year rate dipped to 3.3 percent. These rates remain historically low and may continue to for a while. That's because experts say sales of new homes are running at about half the rate of a healthy housing market  
 
The upscale retailer Coach is planning to close 70 stores within the next year. The company, which is known for its pricey leather bags, managed to recover after the recession; but sales have slumped since then. 
 
If you're looking for a new cheesy snack 7-Eleven may have just what you want.  It's called Doritos Loaded and it's a mozzarella-stick hybrid.  Basically, it's melted cheese encrusted with nacho cheese flavored Doritos. 7-Eleven will begin carrying the new snack food nationwide July 2.
