VIRGINIA BEACH - 300 live Christmas trees will be given away today to junior enlisted sailors and soldiers and their families.

The trees are courtesy of Trees for Troops, a program of the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation in conjunction with FedEx Corporation.

It will be first come, first served beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Sandpiper Recreation Center on board Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story.

The program averages delivery of 17,000 farm-grown trees to 60+ military installations in the U.S. and overseas. About 300 of that number are shipped for servicemen and women in the Middle East. The trees are provided by more than 750 Christmas Tree growers and retailers in 28 states.

"We want to provide a little Christmas spirit and maybe help start a new tradition with military families to be able to experience a traditional Christmas with a Real Christmas Tree," said Cline Church, president of the National Christmas Tree Association and owner of Cline Church Nursery in Fleetwood, N.C
