CHESAPEAKE -- The High Rise Bridge on I-64 in Chesapeake got stuck as it was completing an opening around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
It took about three and a half hours for the draw to closed so that traffic could flow over the span again.
VDOT says workers tried to get the mechanism to work. After a couple of hours, the employees used hand cranks to manually close the draw.
Detours were in place at I-464 and Rt. 17, creating miles and miles of backup across south Hampton Roads.
The draw was finally closed and secured about 6:00 p.m., and traffic was slowly making its way across the bridge.
