CHESAPEAKE -- The jury Tuesday recommended 83 years and 36 years respectively for two men who were found guilty Monday of first-degree murder from last year's shootout on I-64 in Chesapeake.
On Monday, Dedrion Short was convicted on all charges; Willie Simmons was found not guilty of malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer and use/display of a firearm.
Prosecutors said Simmons and Short joined Christopher White in a robbery plot on June 1, 2009 that started with the abduction/murder of Tione Vincent in Norfolk and ended in a shootout that wounded Officer Sean Fleming.
Vincent's widow, Ivy, said, "I'm happy with the outcome."
Jurors heard from witnesses before making the recommendation to the judge.
The defense then moved to have the verdicts set aside. The judge set a hearing for that motion for June 21.
