VIRGINIA BEACH— School board chairman Dan Edwards announced Tuesday night that Superintendent Dr. James G. Merrill is a finalist for Wake County, North Carolina's open superintendent job.

The announcement came at the beginning of the regularly scheduled school board meeting.

According to the Raleigh News & Observer, Merrill is one of three finalists to lead the school system consisting of about 150,000 students.

Dana Bedden, the superintendent of the Irving Independent School District in Texas,  and Ann Blakeney Clark, the deputy superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are the two other finalists according to the paper.

According to the News & Observer, the finalists will return to Wake County next week to meet the public and go through more interviews before a final decision that could come June 4th.

The new superintendent would replace Tony Tata, who was fired by the board’s Democratic majority in September. Tata is now state secretary of transportation.
