VIRGINIA BEACH-Since 1970, Virginia Beach has hosted a Veterans Day Parade at the Oceanfront.
The parade, with hundreds of performers from marching bands to veterans groups, began at 9:00 a.m. at 19th Street and Atlantic Avenue and will end at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial at 19th Street.
This year’s Grand Marshal Earl W. Timmons, past president of the Hampton Roads Council of Veterans Organizations. The honor guards are from the Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach Police and Sheriffs’ Departments.
A solemn ceremony of remembrance at 11:00 a.m. at the Memorial included a wreath laying, a salute to veterans and a flyover with aircraft from the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach.
At the conclusion, officials dedicated the William L. “Bill” Myers Veterans Memorial Park, which will honor veterans whose names were engraved on memorial pavers in the last year.
Many of Virginia's 830,000+ veterans have great concerns about the future of their benefits as Congress tackles the budget deficit.
