CHESAPEAKE -- Nightingale was called to Naval Support Activity Northwest Annex in Chesapeake Friday following an accidental shooting.
According to PIO Kelly O’Sullivan, They initially received a request at 3:30 pm for a medic at Northwest Annex for an unspecified injury. When medics arrived, they determined that the injury was a gunshot wound and notified Ches. Police and PIO O’Sullivan was contacted at 3:43. They also requested that Nightingale be dispatched.
When she got to the scene, the Navy informed PIO O’Sullivan that the shooting took place during a training exercise, but told her nothing about the circumstances. The patient was transported via Nightingale for injuries she said were considered non-life threatening.
Because the facility is under military jurisdiction and engages in classified activity, O'Sullivan said any further information about the incident would have to come from the Navy.
A Public Affairs Officer with II Marine Expeditionary Force, the command responsible for the training exercise, later confirmed that a Marine had received a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the neck, but said further details about the incident wouldn't be available until NCIS had completed its investigation.
He also confirmed the Marine who was injured was in stable condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
