NEWPORT NEWS-Two people were hurt in a robbery outside a convenience store in Newport News.

Police say the shooting occurred around 7:15 p.m. Saturday at Speedy Mart, located at 1904 Jefferson Avenue.

A 58-year-old man was robbed by a man with a gun and as he tried to escape, the robber opened fire, shattering the glass.

Spokesman Harold Eley said a 52-year-old woman inside was hit in the elbow and the man was cut by the broken glass.

Lorenzo Scott was working at the store when it happened.

"The man was going in the store then the boy tried to hijack the man's wallet and told him to give me your wallet and pushed him up against the fence. All of a sudden I heard a shot," he said.

The gunman is described as a young black man who was wearing a dark grey or black hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, and a black-and-white bandanna partially covering his face.

Anyone with information about this robbery and/or the gunman can call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
