NEWPORT NEWS - People living in the Debigh section of Newport News have a community center of their own.
The $14.5 million Denbigh Community Center opened Friday with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The 52,800 square-foot facility sits on the old Denbigh Toyota site. It features a double gymnasium surrounded by an indoor walking track, seven multi-purpose rooms, a full-service concession stand/café, a fitness room, dance room, early childhood center with an outdoor playground, and a teen center. A zero-depth, color-lighted “splash fountain” accents the main entrance.
Rooms will be available to rent for parties and other gatherings; they'll also be used for classes.
To get a close-up look, the city is holding an open house at the center, located at 15198 Warwick Blvd., on Saturday, Feb. 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Ground was broken on the project in April 2010 and construction began a year later.
