PORTSMOUTH - Traffic near the Downtown Tunnel could get ugly this weekend.

Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, I-264 east will be reduced to one lane at the Effingham St. on-ramp while crews install traffic loop sensors as part of the tolling system.

Traffic will funnel into one lane for about 150 yards before opening back up to two lanes right before the tunnel entrance. All lanes of the tunnel will remain open.

Heaviest travel times will be Saturday between 11 a.m and 7 p.m. and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.  Drivers can expect 30-minute delays during those times.

With so many festivals this weekend. Angela Johnson wishes the work was scheduled for a different time.

"I think it's very unfair" she said.

The Midtown Tunnel and the I-64 High Rise Bridge are alternate routes.

The lane should be open by 5:00 a.m. Monday in time for the morning rush.
